A CANZ survey into the impacts of COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown on companion animals showed that many animal guardians were concerned about behavioural changes. CANZ-Accredited Animal Behaviour Consultant Kelly McFarlane addresses the most commonly reported behavioural change, an increase in clingy or needy behaviours.

Dog grooming is not just about fancy haircuts and fluffy coats. A lack of access to grooming services during Alert Levels 3 and 4 had some negative animal welfare impacts too. Angela Anderson, of the National Dog Groomers Association NZ, discusses these impacts and how groomers are dealing with them during Alert Level 2.

Veterinary services were classified as an essential services, and as such continued to be available at all Alert Levels. However, some non-emergency veterinary services were less available during this time, while telemedicine services were more available than usual. The SPCA was classified as an essential service and continued to offer animals care throughout lockdown. With the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19, many were concerned that this may result in an increase in animal abuse, surrender or abandonment. SPCA Manager for the Southern Region Sam Powell talks discusses these concerns, along with adoption of animals during lockdown and beyond.
