The Role

This is an exciting ‘part-time' (0.5 FTE) opportunity to join the Companion Animals Team to ‘raise the bar’ for companion animals through the development of the ‘A Good Life for Animals’ programme of research and education projects. 

As the new Communications and Marketing Officer you will support the Communications and Marketing Manager in promoting positive welfare for companion animals in NZ, responsible pet ownership and improving awareness of CANZ and the NZCAR, including promoting microchipping and registration of pets.  

This is a diverse role that makes good use of your knowledge of effective and innovative communications and marketing to promote and disseminate quality evidence based animal welfare information across various channels, and to make the most of your advanced administration/organisational skills to support CANZ communications and marketing to influence real change – from central government, through industry and also to everyday pet guardians.  

The Communications and Marketing Officer will assist with a variety of work areas including the following key tasks. 

Key Tasks

Writing and production tasks as specified by the Communications and Marketing Manager, including but not limited to;

• Production of brochures and other marketing material
• Writing and editing for the websites and publications
• Storytelling via multiple channels, including social media, traditional media, print and radio/podcast
• Contributing to innovative communication approach
• The development of multi-media materials, including video, infographics
• Supporting the coordination and administration of external events, such as workshops, symposia and conferences, online webinars
• Working across the organisation and communicating with external clients and service providers as required
• Establishing effective relationships and maintaining regular contact with external stakeholders and members of the public
• Contributing to the ongoing development of communications for the NZCAR guardian database.

 Your Skills & Experience

The successful applicant will have;

  • Completed a tertiary qualification in communications or a related discipline or have significant relevant experience  (Preferably degree level).

  • Knowledge of the process of applied research and of animal welfare issues desirable.

  • Experience in effective and innovative communications across a variety of channels.

  • Experience in a writing role and translating technical/scientific information

  • Skills and interest in multi-media formats, including video 

  • Experience with effective use of social media and an understanding of Hootsuite 

  • Previous experience using web editing software is desirable, along with an understanding of SEO/SEM 

  • Effective time management skills, organisation and planning abilities being able to prioritise and effectively manage workloads when subject to tight timeframes

  • Great attention to detail

  • Ability to build positive rapport with different stakeholders

  • Professional in approach, with the ability to work effectively without supervision.

  • The ability to work effectively in a team. 

  • Experience in event administration and marketing with an excellent eye for detail.

  • An impeccable work ethic and experience with working remotely

  • A positive approach to assisting in all aspects of the organisation when required.

  • A passion for advancing animal welfare.
